Visiting Fellow Dr Sarah Holcombe was invited by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT, Human Rights and Indigenous Issues Branch) to participate in the annual UN Human Rights Council Forum – the 12th session of theExpert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), 15-19 July 2019 in Geneva. This was part of the DFAT Speaker Series in a Side Event at the Forum. The invitation was a recognition of Sarah’s work translating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) into the Indigenous language of Pintupi-Luritja. The event was entitled: Language and freedom? The role of language in rights comprehension, agency and enjoyment for Indigenous communities- experiences from Australia.
